Bank branch closure: check the notice and your rights

Check whether the bank gave required notice, request missing information and report non-compliance to the FCAC.

Protect access to your money

An announced closure does not require an immediate fund transfer through a received link. Use the bank’s official app or number.

Confirm the closure

Verify the date, services ending, alternate branch, cash access and offered options. Be cautious if a message does not appear in official channels.

Read the notice

Federally regulated institutions must give notice before certain closures or activity terminations. Keep the letter, posting, receipt date and recipient list.

Request consultation

In some circumstances, a community or customers can request a public meeting. State concrete access problems instead of general opposition.

Report non-compliance

Use the bank’s complaint process first, then report possible non-compliance to the FCAC. The FCAC supervises compliance but does not necessarily require a branch to remain open.
