Blue-Green Algae in Quebec: Recognize a Bloom and Avoid Exposure
Avoid contaminated water, protect children and pets and follow official notices rather than judging only by appearance.
Stay out of suspect water
Scum, paint-like streaks, pea soup or green-blue clumps may indicate a bloom. Keep children and animals away and avoid swimming or splash activities.
Looks are not enough
Some blooms are subtle and other material harmless. Check municipal and government notices; no sign does not guarantee safety.
Drinking water
Do not drink suspect lake water or use it for ice, cooking or teeth. Boiling may not remove toxins and can concentrate them.
Pets
Dogs swallow water and lick fur. Keep them away, rinse after contact with safe water and seek veterinary care for vomiting, weakness, tremors or seizures.
Accidental contact
Leave the water, remove swimwear and rinse skin and eyes. Call poison control or Info-Santé 811 according to exposure and symptoms.
Food
Follow official fishing and consumption advisories. Do not assume cooking or freezing removes risk.
Report
Photograph from safety and record place, date, extent and appearance through Quebec or municipal reporting.
Return
Wait for official clearance or operator instructions; visual disappearance is not proof.
Plan an alternative
Before travelling, check monitored beaches and prepare a replacement activity. Bring enough safe drinking water so you never need to rely directly on lake water.
Camping and cottages
A portable filter designed for ordinary microbes does not guarantee removal of cyanobacterial toxins. Bring a safe water supply and a backup plan. Tell every visitor about the advisory, especially children who might fill a bottle or let a pet drink.
