Broken Fluorescent Bulb: Clean Up Mercury Without a Vacuum
Ventilate, collect debris without sweeping or vacuuming, and contain materials before disposal.
Leave the room, close access and ventilate outdoors. Shut forced-air circulation that could spread vapour when this can be done without crossing debris.
Do not vacuum or sweep
Health Canada advises against vacuuming during initial cleanup because it can spread mercury vapour and dust. Do not use a broom.
Collect debris
Wear disposable gloves when possible. Use stiff cardboard for pieces, then adhesive tape for small glass and powder. Wipe with a disposable damp towel.
Contain it
Place glass, powder and cleanup materials in an airtight container. Wash hands and continue ventilation. Do not reuse heavily contaminated fabric without checking disposal guidance.
Dispose properly
Ask the municipality or hazardous-waste depot how to deliver mercury-containing lamps and debris. Obtain specialized guidance for many bulbs or a spill of liquid mercury.
