Dead or Sick Wild Bird in Quebec: Report It Without Touching It
Document a dead or sick wild bird, avoid exposure and use the appropriate surveillance line.
Keep children and animals away. Do not transport or contain the bird until you receive instructions.
Observe from a distance
Record the suspected species, number of birds, behaviour, date and precise location. Take a photo from a distance if this does not bring you near other sick animals.
Report it
Quebec asks the public to report dead or sick wild birds at 1-877-346-6763. Birds of prey and wild turkeys must also be reported to SOS Poaching – Wildlife Emergency.
Wait for disposal instructions
Some specimens may be collected for surveillance. If you are instructed to dispose of a carcass, follow the specified method and protective measures, then wash your hands.
Protect domestic animals
Keep dogs, cats and poultry away from the carcass and droppings. If an animal had contact, call a veterinarian and mention possible exposure to a sick wild bird.
