St. Lawrence animal movements: sharks, sturgeon and whales
Explore historical OTN/OBIS animal-telemetry detections and ROMM marine-mammal observations across the St. Lawrence, estuary, Gulf and Saguenay area.
What does Atlas show?
The telemetry layer uses only OTN datasets already published in OBIS under open licences: large-scale sturgeon movements in the St. Lawrence system, Greenland shark, blue and porbeagle sharks, and a second blue-shark tracking project. Most points are from acoustic telemetry: a tag is recorded when the animal passes near a receiver. It is not continuous GPS.
The marine-mammal layer comes from the Réseau d’observation de mammifères marins (ROMM). These historical observations help explore species reported in the St. Lawrence and around the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park without claiming where an animal is today.
Why are positions generalized?
Even when researchers have already released a detection, Atlas does not need to turn it into a fine-scale wildlife locator. Telemetry points are therefore rounded to about 0.05°, and ROMM observations are also presented as historical. The map is for understanding migrations, corridors and used areas, not for pursuing wildlife.
Sources and licences
The four selected telemetry datasets are published by the Ocean Tracking Network through the Ocean Biodiversity Information System under CC BY 4.0. The ROMM observations integrated by Atlas are also CC BY 4.0. Atlas keeps links to the original records and does not mirror the complete large source datasets.
