Electric Wheelchair or Mobility Scooter: Quebec Road Rules
Verify whether the device is a compliant motorized mobility aid, where it may travel and required equipment.
A three- or four-wheel scooter sold on the market is not automatically a compliant motorized mobility aid for public roads.
Check the definition
A motorized mobility aid must generally be designed for one person with walking limitations, electrically powered, without pedals, with a seat, backrest, footrest and armrests, and within specified dimensions.
Choose the travel space
Rules vary for bike lanes, sidewalks, roadways, shoulders and speed limits. On roads above 50 km/h, roadway use is sharply limited and additional equipment may apply.
Equipment
Check brakes, reflectors, strips, lights, headlamps and flag for the aid type and location. A modified device or one with failed mandatory equipment must not be used on the road.
Prohibited conduct
Freeways, moving between rows of vehicles, ordinary passenger transport and trailers are prohibited, subject to the stated exception for a young child with a restraint.
