Guide

Radioactive material or radiation symbol found: move away and report it

Limit time near the object, increase distance and contact emergency services and the CNSC without handling it.

Do not touch or transport

Move away, prevent access from a safe distance and call 911. Do not open a container or place the object in a vehicle.

Reduce exposure

Leave by the shortest safe route without running or raising dust. If you touched the object, do not eat and wait for decontamination instructions.

Describe from a distance

Record the location, symbol, shape, colour, label and circumstances only if visible without returning. Do not use personal instruments to test it.

Notify authorities

The CNSC publishes an emergency line for accidents and lost or damaged radioactive material. Give police the duty-officer number when needed.

Follow instructions

Keep names, time, potentially exposed people and occurrence number. Do not return until the perimeter is released.
