Moving marine aquatic organisms: introduction and transfer licensing
Identify the authority, prepare a movement application and obtain the permit conditions.
An aquaculture licence does not necessarily authorize the proposed movement.
Classify the movement
Introductions and transfers describe different geographic situations. Identify the species, origin and destination so the authority can confirm which rules govern the project. [1]
Find the right authority
For marine environments in Québec, contact the relevant DFO committee. Freshwater movements fall under Québec jurisdiction; do not automatically use the federal process. [3]
Apply before moving organisms
Send the form and requested supporting information to the destination committee. Review may require risk assessment, so allow flexibility in the project schedule. [2]
Check additional authorizations
Wait for the licence and follow its conditions. Check health and import requirements separately: introduction or transfer approval does not necessarily satisfy those other obligations. [2]
