Guide

Pilots trained abroad: temporary validation or a Canadian licence

Choose a pathway by duration, issuing country and required licence category.

Check before acting

A foreign licence does not automatically permit every operation on a Canadian aircraft.

Choose validation or issuance

For a short period, consider foreign-licence validation. For a Canadian credential, have possible credits and category-specific requirements assessed. [1]

Gather evidence

Prepare the licence, ratings, experience and required medical documentation. Requirements differ for aeroplanes, helicopters and privileges; use the section matching the application. [1]

Review the FAA pathway

A US certificate holder may qualify under the Canada–US conversion agreement. Check eligible credentials and verification steps before choosing the general pathway. [2]

Wait for issued privileges

Confirm examinations, validations and documents still required. Before flying, check the privileges and limitations actually granted, not just those of the original credential. [2]
