Three nuisances, three doors
Late-night parties, music and shouting fall under the municipal by-law and, at night, a police response. Noise inside a dwelling can lead to the lease and the housing tribunal. Industrial or commercial noise (ventilation, trucks, a construction site) goes to the municipality and, depending on the source, the environment ministry.
Before filing a complaint
Note dates and times, what is heard, where it comes from and what it prevents. Repeat the record over two weeks: a single episode is hard to argue. Talk to the neighbour once, calmly; if that is impossible, move to writing. Inform the landlord or the condo syndicate when you rent or co-own.
When it is at night or escalating
During the nuisance, call the non-emergency police line (911 only for danger, threats or violence): a call during the event produces a dated report, and the event number is your evidence. For repeated noise without urgency, file a written request with the responsible municipal service and ask in writing what follow-up is given.
What does not work
Answering with noise, banging on the wall, posting about it online or leaving an aggressive message. None produces useful evidence, and some of these reactions can be turned against you.
