Lost, stolen or damaged Quebec driver's licence: replacement and renewal

What to do when a Quebec driver's licence is lost, stolen or damaged, how replacement works, and why renewal is a separate process.

Replacement and renewal are different. A valid licence that is lost, stolen or damaged is replaced. A licence approaching expiry follows the SAAQ renewal process.

Lost, stolen or damaged licence

The SAAQ provides a replacement process. Depending on eligibility, some steps may be available through SAAQclic while others require a service outlet. Check whether a temporary licence is available for your situation.

If identity documents were stolen too

  1. List every missing document.
  2. Report identity theft risks when appropriate.
  3. Replace each document through its official issuer.
  4. Monitor accounts and credit files if sensitive information was exposed.

Renewal

Follow the SAAQ renewal notice and the instructions for your age, licence class and situation. Medical or administrative requirements can change the process.

Before visiting a service outlet

  • Check whether SAAQclic can handle the request.
  • Confirm required identification.
  • Check current fees.
  • Do not assume a phone photo of the licence is a legal substitute.
