Pleasure-craft accident: rescue, police and marine reporting
Rescue, preserve information and route a pleasure-craft accident correctly without confusing police and TSB roles.
Raise the alarm through 911 or the proper marine channel, wear flotation and do not re-enter a dangerous area to recover property.
Protect people
Account for occupants, provide feasible first aid and prevent further collision, fire, sinking or pollution. Follow responder instructions.
Exchange information
Record names, contact details, vessel descriptions and numbers, insurers, witnesses, location, weather and damage. Do not admit liability at the scene.
Notify police
The Transportation Safety Board says accidents involving pleasure craft should be reported to local police. Ask for an occurrence number.
Understand the TSB role
The TSB receives marine occurrences within its mandate and investigates for safety, not civil fault. A police report does not replace notice to an insurer.
