Getting experience recognised and training as an adult in Quebec

A salesperson who became a manager, an orderly who became a technician, an immigrant with fifteen years in a trade: in all three cases the question is not which diploma is missing, but how to have skills recognised.

⚠ Immigration thresholds and programs change fast — check the date

This page describes the general structure of the system, which stays stable. But exact thresholds, fees, and specific program statuses can change within weeks. Before relying on a specific figure or date below, confirm the current status on Quebec.ca or Canada.ca.

Check before acting

A salesperson who became a manager, an orderly who became a technician, an immigrant with fifteen years in a trade: in all three cases the question is not which diploma is missing, but how to have skills recognised.

Diploma, attestation, experience: three paths

A regulated trade goes through the order or regulatory body, with an equivalence or restrictive permit mechanism. For a non-regulated trade, employers look at experience and training, and prior learning recognition turns work experience into recognised units or an attestation.

How prior learning recognition works

Choose a precise target (a programme, diploma or attestation), describe tasks, responsibilities, equipment and work environments with evidence (contracts, employer letters, pay slips, photos, reports, a portfolio), go through an institution that offers the process, submit to the assessment (interview, practical test, documented work), and receive a written decision.

Funding

Financial assistance for studies, workforce training and employment programmes, and retraining funding in collective layoff situations. For a private "accredited programme", verify accreditation and title recognition before paying.

Mistakes that cost time

Confusing equivalence (diplomas) with recognition of competences, filing without documents, changing the target mid-way so that assessed units cannot be transferred, skipping professional orders for regulated trades, and missing admission deadlines.
