Propane Smell or Leak in Quebec: Evacuate Without Creating a Spark

Respond to a rotten-egg smell, damaged cylinder or suspected leak without increasing the risk.

Evacuate and call 911

Move everyone out. Do not operate a switch, phone, engine, flame or electrical device where gas may be present.

Leave without searching

Do not try to locate the leak by smell or with a flame. Move away, keep others clear and call from outside.

Close only when safe

Quebec guidance says to close a cylinder valve after an accident only if it is accessible without danger. Never return toward a cylinder, tank or building to do so.

Have it inspected

Notify the propane supplier and have the installation checked by a qualified person. Do not reuse a dented, rusted, overheated or dropped cylinder and do not test the leak yourself.

Document after the emergency

Once responders authorize entry, photograph damage, equipment, serial number and surroundings. Notify the insurer, owner or manager and keep invoices and reports.
