Name or correct a place: propose a Quebec toponym

Check the official name, document usage and submit a structured proposal to the Commission de toponymie.

Do not alter signs

A name proposal does not authorize you to install, remove or alter a plaque, road sign or marker.

Check the directory

Search the Place Names Database and confirm municipality, coordinates, feature type and official spelling. A common name may already be recorded.

Choose the request

Distinguish a new designation, factual correction, usage variant and commemoration. Clearly explain the territory concerned.

Document the name

Provide origin, meaning, age, sources, pronunciation, local support and connection to the place. For a person, check applicable commemorative criteria.

Submit the proposal

The Commission de toponymie provides a process to propose a place name. It reviews the file; a proposal does not automatically become official.
