Starting a marine career: obtain a candidate number and required seafarer documents
Identify the position and voyage, open a candidate file, gather identity, training and sea service, then request the correct documents.
A discharge book is not a passport or general proof of competency. Each position may also require separate training, medical and competency certificates.
Confirm the scope
Define the position, vessel type, tonnage, voyage area and intended progression to avoid requesting an unnecessary document.
Prepare the information
Contact a Marine Safety office to obtain or locate the candidate number and confirm the applicable form.
Complete the process
Prepare identity, citizenship or status, photo, medical, training, sea-service testimonials and fees as required.
Keep follow-up records
Verify every file entry and retain copies of certificates, service records and renewal dates.
