Reportable animal disease: respond to a suspected case
Limit contact, call a veterinarian and notify the CFIA when an animal may have a reportable disease.
Separate people and animals without risky movement. For urgent human exposure, call medical services and mention the animal contact.
Pause movements
Do not buy, sell, move or slaughter the suspect animal without instructions. Limit visitors, vehicles, tools and contact between groups.
Call the veterinarian
Describe species, animal count, symptoms, deaths, dates, recent movements and feed. Follow recommended biosecurity measures.
Notify the CFIA
Owners, veterinarians and laboratories must report suspected cases of reportable diseases to a Canadian Food Inspection Agency district veterinarian.
Keep a timeline
Retain animal, movement, treatment, supplier and visitor records. Do not publish an unconfirmed diagnosis; the authority will determine sampling and restrictions.
