Swollen, Hot or Damaged Lithium-Ion Battery: Prevent a Fire
Stop charging, isolate the device without puncturing it and arrange safe disposal.
Evacuate, close the door when possible and call 911. Do not carry a burning device or block your exit trying to save it.
Stop using it
Unplug only when safe. Never recharge a swollen, cracked, wet, punctured or heavily impacted battery. Do not compress it.
Isolate without improvising
Move the device away from combustible materials in a safe monitored area, without sealing it in a container that can build pressure or heat. Follow manufacturer or fire-service instructions.
Prevent recurrence
Use the original or approved charger, charge at room temperature on a hard visible surface away from an exit, and do not charge longer than recommended.
Dispose of it
Do not place a lithium-ion battery in garbage or ordinary recycling. Ask the municipality or hazardous-waste depot where to bring a damaged battery and warn staff about its condition.
