Guide

Transporting a deceased person into or out of Québec: documents and approvals

Arrange authorized transport and check coroner procedures for the route.

Check before acting

This guide does not cover cremated remains or replace destination requirements.

Appoint the provider

Transport is handled by an authorized funeral business or a carrier it appoints under the rules. Clearly identify the business responsible for the file. [1]

Check departure from Québec

Moving a body out of Québec requires prior coroner authorization. Have this approval and accompanying transport documents obtained before confirming departure. [3]

Check entry into Québec

On entry, certain death circumstances or unknown identity or cause require coroner involvement. Tell the provider about these factors rather than assuming the ordinary process applies. [1]

Coordinate the complete file

Ask the funeral professional to confirm documents for every part of the route and other authorities’ requirements. Keep correspondence and approval copies together. [2]
