Unauthorized auto repair or invoice above the estimate
Compare the estimate, authorizations and invoice, then dispute unapproved work or charges in writing.
A billing dispute does not make the vehicle safe. If the garage identifies a critical defect, request a written explanation and arrange towing or a second opinion when needed.
Gather every version
Collect the initial request, written estimate, texts, call notes, authorizations, itemized invoice, photographs and returned parts. Record who accepted what, when and at what price.
Compare with the rules
For covered repairs, a written estimate is generally required above the prescribed threshold, subject to exceptions or waiver. The repairer normally cannot exceed the estimated total without authorization and must provide an itemized invoice.
Dispute clearly
Identify in writing the disputed work or amounts, the rule relied on and the remedy requested. Pay under protest only after understanding the consequences; a garage may assert rights over the vehicle, sometimes requiring prompt legal advice.
Escalate with evidence
Use the Office de la protection du consommateur’s steps: negotiation, complaint, demand letter and, if necessary, court. Preserve the vehicle or replaced parts as evidence when possible and safe.
