VoIP phone and 911: keep the emergency address updated
Verify the address registered with the provider, understand VoIP routing and plan for outages.
Immediately tell the operator your location, number and emergency. If the call drops, call back and use another available phone.
Understand the difference
Fixed or nomadic VoIP may route 911 through a centre different from a traditional line. Address and number may not appear automatically.
Update the address
Open the provider’s official account and verify the physical address, unit, city, postal code and callback number. Check again after a move or long-term relocation.
Do not test by calling 911
Do not place an unauthorized test call. Ask the provider for its validation method and read the mandatory notice about service limitations.
Plan for outages
VoIP generally depends on Internet and electricity. Keep another charged calling method and display the address near the phone for visitors or children.
