New rail operation on federally regulated track: obtain Transport Canada’s certificate before operating

Classify the company and network, describe operations and safety system, attach records and report every change.

Priority

The Agency’s certificate of fitness and Transport Canada’s operating certificate are distinct and both may be required.

Confirm the scope

Determine whether the company is a federal railway or a local company operating equipment on federal track.

Describe network, services, equipment, staff, interfaces, commodities and intended start date.

Gather the safety management system, rules, related certificates, insurance and executive attestations.

File the form, await the certificate and timely report acquisition, transfer, change or cessation.
