Archaeological excavation or intervention: apply for, amend or cancel a Quebec permit

Check site status, demonstrate qualifications and resources, obtain owner consent and file the application.

Priority

An accidental find does not authorize excavation. Stop work, protect the site and use the discovery procedure instead of moving remains.

Check the site

Consult the Quebec cultural heritage register and site constraints. A protected place may require work authorization in addition to a research permit.

Build the team

Document the director’s qualifications, methods, schedule, resources, conservation and disposition of objects. Plan for required specialists.

Obtain agreements

Attach written consent and an agreement with the owner specifying the work, duration and conservation measures.

File and manage

Send the form and documents to the ministry, wait for written approval before intervening and report an amendment or cancellation through the stated channel.
