ATV or Snowmobile Accident in Quebec: SAAQ, Insurance and Evidence

Secure the scene, understand limited SAAQ coverage and open the right files with police and the insurer.

Injury or danger: call 911, protect the scene without exposing yourself to traffic or cold, and do not move a seriously injured person unless immediate danger requires it. Give a trail marker, GPS point, access road or last known location.

A licence plate does not mean full SAAQ coverage

An accident involving only a snowmobile, ATV or another off-road vehicle is generally excluded from Quebec's public automobile injury plan. An exception may apply when a moving vehicle covered by the plan is involved. Ask the SAAQ to classify the event instead of deciding based only on where it occurred.

Private insurance

The owner of an off-road vehicle must carry at least $1,000,000 in civil-liability insurance. That coverage concerns liability to others; it does not automatically cover your injuries, vehicle, towing or every driver. Open a claim promptly and ask which exact protections apply.

Police and documentation

Follow police instructions about the collision report. Photograph the scene, tracks, damage, protective equipment and signs only when safe. Record witnesses, conditions, direction of travel, registration numbers and towing provider.

Special cases

A work-related accident may fall under the CNESST. A trail club or operator may require a separate report. Keep medical reports, invoices, ownership proof, the insurance policy and communications; do not repair or discard equipment before insurer authorization.
