Cancelled or Postponed Event Ticket in Quebec: Identify the Actual Remedy

Distinguish a personal cancellation, cancelled or postponed event, reseller and distance purchase.

The refund rule is not identical in every case

The law, seller policy and type of intermediary determine the remedy. Save the original advertisement before it changes.

Identify the legal seller

Check whether payment went to the promoter, venue, ticket platform or reseller. Keep the invoice, seat, price, promised date, conditions and proof of cancellation or postponement.

You can no longer attend

The merchant can generally apply its cancellation, exchange or resale policy when the event still occurs as advertised.

Cancelled, postponed or misrepresented event

For certain distance purchases and resales, Quebec consumer law permits cancellation in specific situations and time limits, including some reseller failures to deliver or cancelled events.

Claim in writing

Request the applicable refund or solution from the seller with the facts and preserve proof. If unresolved, use OPC steps and then check chargeback conditions with the card issuer.
