Disputing a tax assessment: Revenu Québec and the CRA

How to prepare an objection when an assessment changes your income, deduction or credit, and why Quebec and federal objections must be handled separately.

A phone call does not necessarily preserve an objection deadline. If the deadline is approaching, verify the official limit and file the objection in the required form.

Compare the return and the assessment

  • Identify the lines changed by the tax authority.
  • Record the assessment or reassessment date.
  • Read the explanations on the notice.
  • Gather receipts, slips, contracts, calculations and correspondence supporting your position.

Revenu Québec

A simple error can sometimes be resolved by contacting the responsible area first. If disagreement remains, a formal notice of objection may be required. Many Quebec assessments use a general 90-day objection period, but special rules and extensions can apply; confirm the deadline shown for your assessment.

Canada Revenue Agency

The CRA has its own objection process. Filing with Revenu Québec does not automatically contest a federal assessment, and filing with the CRA does not contest a Quebec assessment.

Balance owing during the dispute

An objection does not erase the assessed amount. Interest and collection rules can vary by debt type and authority. Check the current rules before deciding how to handle a balance while the objection is pending.

Writing a useful objection

  1. Identify the assessment.
  2. List each disputed item.
  3. Explain the facts chronologically.
  4. Attach clearly labelled evidence.
  5. Keep a complete copy and proof of filing.
