Moved buoy or defective navigation aid: report it to the Coast Guard
Stay safe, record the position and promptly report a missing, moved, damaged or unlit navigation aid.
Do not rely on an aid that appears defective and do not try to move it. Slow down, keep watch and use current official charts and warnings.
Observe without exposure
Identify the aid’s colour, shape, light, number or name. Note whether it is missing, off position, damaged, unlit or showing improper characteristics.
Record the position
Save coordinates, time, conditions, viewing direction and estimated distance. A photograph may help if it can be taken without a detour or risky manoeuvre.
Report it immediately
The Coast Guard asks mariners to report the problem to the nearest Marine Communications and Traffic Services centre or Coast Guard office.
Proceed cautiously
Check navigational warnings and do not assume the report removes the hazard immediately. Brief others aboard without presenting an unverified position as certain.
