Dangerous Consumer Product: Secure, Preserve and Report the Incident
Respond when a product injures, nearly injures, malfunctions dangerously or causes property damage.
Call 911 when immediate intervention is required. Stop using the product and prevent anyone else from accessing it.
Do not alter evidence
Unplug or isolate the product only when safe. Do not repair, dismantle or discard it before instructions from the manufacturer, insurer or authority.
Document it
Photograph the product, labels, model, serial number, damage and installation. Preserve the receipt, order, packaging, instructions, date, circumstances, injury and care received.
Report to Health Canada
A consumer can report a death, injury or near miss, dangerous malfunction, inadequate warning or property damage involving a consumer product or cosmetic.
Notify other responsible parties
Notify the manufacturer and seller in writing and check official recalls. Handle refund, warranty, insurance or compensation claims separately; a safety report does not settle those amounts.
