Guide

Letters, photographs or private records of national interest: offer them to Library and Archives Canada

Preserve original order, describe provenance and rights, submit an offer before shipping, then arrange transfer if the records are accepted.

Priority

Do not ship originals without acceptance and instructions. Do not clean, tape, annotate or reorganize a fragile collection.

Assess the right destination

LAC seeks unpublished records related to Canadian history and culture. Museum objects, published books or strictly local archives may belong with another institution.

Preserve context

Keep original order, envelopes and groupings. Record the creator, dates, subjects, provenance, current owner and storage location.

Prepare digital files

Ensure they are readable, virus-free and have no passwords, digital signatures or active macros. Do not mix formats without explanation.

Make an offer

Complete the offer form and wait for assessment. If accepted, discuss transport, ownership, copyright, access restrictions and any official receipt.
