Disputed electricity or gas meter: request a verification

Rule out a leak, review the bill and use the provider then Measurement Canada process to dispute measurement.

Gas odour or hot equipment

Leave without operating switches or flames and call the distributor’s emergency service or 911 from a safe place. Never tamper with the meter.

Review the bill

Compare billing periods, actual or estimated readings, rates, a move, weather and new appliances. Photograph the display without opening or altering the installation.

Contact the provider

Request reading history, correction of administrative errors and its dispute process. Keep bills, the meter number and replies.

Request a test

Measurement Canada oversees meter accuracy and the complaint process. A meter may be removed and tested; ask in advance about possible fees depending on the result.

Separate remedies

Metrological verification concerns the meter. A rate, contract, connection or collection dispute may follow another process.
