Elevator or lifting-device accident: get help and report it to the RBQ

Obtain emergency help, preserve the facts and report the equipment incident to the Régie du bâtiment.

Person trapped or injured

Use the emergency button or telephone and call 911. Do not force doors or try to exit between floors without trained responders.

Stabilize and prevent use

After rescue, notify the building owner, manager or responsible person. Ask that the device be taken out of service when it presents a hazard and do not restart it yourself.

Record the facts

Note the address, device, floor, date, time, observed movement, doors, alarms, number of people, injuries, witnesses and responders. Take photographs only when they do not interfere with rescue or preservation of the scene.

Report to the RBQ

The Régie du bâtiment accepts reports of accidents involving elevators and other lifting devices. A victim or witness can provide information; the owner or operator may also have separate reporting and preservation duties.

Keep other files separate

Keep medical reports, police or fire file numbers, manager communications, photographs and expenses. A safety report to the RBQ does not replace an insurance claim, employer notice or civil remedy.
