Household Burn in Quebec: Cool, Cover and Choose 811 or 911

Respond to a burn from hot liquid, steam or flame without applying a remedy that can worsen the injury.

Severe burn or active danger

Call 911 for a large or deep burn, an injury to the face or airway, an electrical or chemical burn, or a person in distress.

Move away from the source

Extinguish flames and move the person from danger without exposing yourself. Remove jewellery and loose clothing near the area. Do not pull away fabric stuck to skin.

Cool with fresh water

Place the burn under cool, not icy, water. Quebec first-aid guidance specifies ten minutes for burns from flame, liquid or steam. Do not use ice, butter, oil, toothpaste or another home remedy.

Protect the area

After cooling, loosely cover it with a clean non-stick dressing. Do not break blisters. Keep the rest of the person warm and remove rings or bracelets before swelling when they come off easily.

Get advice

Call Info-Santé 811 when severity is uncertain, for a child or vulnerable person, or if pain, redness, swelling or signs of infection increase. A burn may be deeper than it first appears.
