Laboratory using human pathogens or toxins: obtain and maintain the federal licence

Inventory materials and activities, select the risk group, demonstrate containment and biosecurity, then manage changes and incidents.

Priority

Do not acquire or begin work with regulated material before confirming the applicable exemption, registration or licence and containment conditions.

Confirm the scope

List organisms, toxins, risk groups, amounts, activities, locations, imports and transfers; check exclusions and biological safety roles.

Prepare the information

Compare the Canadian Biosafety Standard, containment level, access controls, inventories, emergency plan and required clearance.

Complete the process

Create the Portal account, assign roles and attach facility information, attestations and records required for the licence category.

Keep follow-up records

Wait for issuance, follow conditions and dates, and report changes, additions, incidents, renewal or program closure.
