Inaccurate gas pump: document it and complain to Measurement Canada
Check the receipt and pump number, notify the retailer and file a complaint when the delivered volume appears inaccurate.
Move away from the pump, switch off the engine, alert staff immediately and call 911 for an immediate danger. A measurement complaint comes only after the area is safe.
Check before drawing a conclusion
Compare tank capacity, the level before and after, the displayed volume and the receipt. A vehicle fuel gauge is not precise evidence; a tank may also have reserve space or a usable volume different from its nominal capacity.
Preserve the identifiers
Record the station, address, date, time, pump number, fuel type and price, litres charged and payment method. Photograph the display and inspection sticker without obstructing other customers, and keep the original receipt.
Notify the retailer first
Calmly explain the discrepancy to the person in charge and ask that the pump be checked. Record the person’s name, response and any refund offered. Do not attempt to test the device with your own container.
File a measurement complaint
Measurement Canada accepts complaints when a purchase appears to involve an inaccurate measurement, including at a gas pump. Provide facts and device identifiers. The agency may review or inspect the equipment; a regulatory complaint does not guarantee an individual refund.
