Lottery and gambling in Quebec: tickets, prizes, tax and help

A lost ticket is just a lost ticket. An unsigned winning ticket, an unclaimed prize, a prize shared with a friend and losses nobody admits: four different situations with four different steps.

Sign the ticket

A winning ticket is a bearer instrument: whoever presents it is paid, unless you can prove otherwise. Signing the back, keeping it out of a shared wallet and photographing it before handing it over are three free steps.

Tickets and draws

Check the sale period, the claim deadline published by the lottery, the place and the documents needed to claim, and who actually bought the ticket when a group or a couple played together.

Is the prize taxable?

Prizes from a state lottery and gambling winnings are generally not taxable income, while a prize linked to a commercial contest or income from organised gambling can be. The reference is Revenu Quebec and the Canada Revenue Agency, not the common belief that "lotteries are not taxable".

When gambling becomes a problem

Voluntary self-exclusion exists, and it can be requested online depending on the product. For a relative whose savings are disappearing, the exploitation complaint and caregiver resources are the relevant doors.
