Retail opening hours are set by a Quebec statute that establishes a general framework and leaves exceptions by type of store, by region and by day. That is why two stores of the same banner, thirty kilometres apart, do not open at the same time.
What changes the schedule of a specific store
The kind of business (food, pharmacy, hardware, furniture, tourist zone), the municipality, and the day. Holidays under the retail law and holidays under the labour standards are not the same list.
What a consumer can do
Check the posted schedule before travelling. Complaints about opening outside the permitted periods go to the ministry responsible for applying the admission-hours law, not to the store; a misleading commercial practice goes to the consumer protection office, a different door.
