Missing Person in Quebec: Report Promptly and Help the Search
Act without waiting for an arbitrary delay, give police useful information and coordinate relatives without interfering with the investigation.
Do not wait an arbitrary period
Contact police immediately when an absence is unusual or concerning. Call 911 when a child, vulnerable person or immediate danger is involved. Do not wait 24 or 48 hours because of a myth.
Prepare the report
Provide a recent photo, description, clothing, last confirmed time and place, vehicle, phone, routines, medication, vulnerabilities and possible locations. Separate facts from assumptions and retain the file number.
Preserve information
Do not unnecessarily search, clean or change devices, accounts, a vehicle or room that may help. Record incoming calls and messages but do not unlawfully access an account.
Coordinate relatives
Designate one police contact and one person to log steps. Check hospitals or suggested places only with police guidance to avoid duplication and preserve evidence.
Social media
Ask the investigator what to publish. Use an approved photo and text, official police contact and date. Do not disclose private numbers, diagnoses, family disputes or unconfirmed accusations.
Ground searches
Do not enter dangerous or private areas without coordination. Wear visible clothing, work in teams, record covered sectors and do not touch potentially relevant objects.
Scams
Do not pay supposed informants or provide financial data. Save messages, numbers, accounts and screenshots and notify police.
When the person returns
Tell police immediately rather than merely deleting posts. Let professionals assess safety and medical needs, then remove notices and ask others to stop sharing.
Support the family
Divide meals, transportation, child care and communications among trusted people. Avoid blaming or publicly questioning relatives. A designated person can screen calls, record offers of help and protect essential breaks.
