Obstruction in navigable water: report it to Transport Canada
Avoid the obstruction, record its location and notify the Navigation Protection Program of a hazard or interfering work.
Slow down, keep watch and do not try to move a cable, tree, wreck or structure. For immediate distress, alert the Coast Guard or 911.
Describe the obstruction
Record its nature, apparent size, position, channel, current, tide and visibility. Distinguish a temporary obstacle from an installed dock or work.
Collect identifiers
Record the water body, municipality, coordinates, date, time and photos taken without a risky manoeuvre. State whether a vessel had to divert.
Notify the federal program
Transport Canada asks for prompt notice to the regional Navigation Protection Program office. If you are responsible for the obstruction, follow its specific duties.
Maintain caution
A report does not guarantee immediate removal. Check navigational warnings and do not place an unauthorized buoy or light yourself.
