Odometer rollback or false mileage: preserve evidence and report it
Compare history and maintenance records, notify the seller in writing and report potentially altered mileage.
Do not dismantle the dashboard or correct the display before a documented assessment. Work on it can destroy evidence.
Compare records
Gather the contract, ad, dealer label, history reports, maintenance invoices, inspections and dated mileage readings. Look for a decrease or impossible progression.
Obtain an assessment
Ask a competent shop for a written diagnosis of the display, module and inconsistencies without asking it to allege fraud it cannot prove.
Notify the seller
Promptly disclose the problem in writing and state the requested remedy. Keep the vehicle and parts available for an appropriate assessment.
Report to authorities
The OPC says a concealed odometer rollback should be reported to the Office and the RCMP. A civil remedy against the seller remains a separate file.
