Pleasure Craft Licence: transfer or update it after a sale
Determine who must act, gather proof of sale and update the craft’s federal licence.
A craft licence identifies the vessel; it does not replace an operator card, required safety equipment or registration when registration applies.
Distinguish the documents
Check whether the vessel has a Pleasure Craft Licence or a registration certificate. The service, duties and numbers are different.
Prepare the transaction
Keep the bill of sale, party identification, description, hull serial number and licence number. Buyer and seller should retain a signed dated copy.
Complete the transfer
Use Transport Canada’s service to transfer the licence and update the name, address or vessel information. The number normally stays with the craft when it is sold.
Keep proof
Retain the confirmation and carry a copy as required. Updating the licence does not automatically settle tax, insurance, trailer or marina-access matters.
