Move nothing, keep people away and let police and the coroner determine the nature of a discovery.
Immediately stop digging or handling. Step away, prevent access without walking through the area and call 911 or local police.
Preserve the scene
Do not collect bone, clothing, jewellery or soil. Do not try to decide whether the material is human, animal or ancient.
Give a clear location
Provide the address, coordinates if available, access point, person on site and terrain hazards. Follow dispatcher instructions.
Record without broadcasting
Note how the find was made and who entered the area. Avoid close-up photographs and social-media publication.
Let authorities route it
Police can involve the coroner or specialists, and an archaeological possibility can also be routed correctly. Wait for authorization before resuming work.
