Issue advertising during an election: obtain private-intervenor authorization

Determine whether spending requires the status, check eligibility, send the form to the correct official and account for expenses.

Priority

This status does not permit directly supporting or opposing a candidate or party. A corporation, association or union cannot simply act as a group of electors.

Assess the spending

An opinion expressed at no cost is not necessarily election spending. Describe medium, cost, period, audience and message before deciding.

Check eligibility

Confirm elector status, group composition, absence of a legal person and a permitted purpose for the advertising.

Apply for authorization

Use the form for the provincial, municipal or school level and send it to the stated official within the applicable window.

Manage expenses

Respect the cap, use only permitted funds, keep invoices and records and file the required post-election return.
