Guide

Constructing or operating a federal railway: establish insurance and obtain a certificate of fitness

Define operations, calculate insurance coverage, prepare attestations and vary the certificate before a material change.

Priority

A certificate of fitness does not replace the operating certificate or construction approvals. Inadequate coverage can suspend operating authority.

Confirm the scope

Describe construction or operations, lines, agreements, passenger or freight traffic and prescribed commodity volumes.

Prepare the information

Determine statutory liability insurance and obtain the policies, bonds and attestations required.

Complete the process

Complete the issue or variance application with corporate structure, operations and financial evidence.

Keep follow-up records

File before operating and monitor insurance renewal, traffic changes and annual obligations.
