Railway noise or vibration: prepare a complaint to the Canadian Transportation Agency
Document the disturbance, try direct resolution and apply to the Agency when the railway dispute persists.
Do not approach the track to measure or film. For an immediate railway hazard, use the emergency number posted at the crossing or call 911.
Identify the source
Record the subdivision or crossing, railway company, type of activity, times, duration, vibration and affected rooms. Keep a dated log from a safe place.
Try to resolve it
Contact the railway company and, when useful, your municipality. Propose a specific reasonable solution and keep replies and file numbers.
Build the record
Gather the log, videos taken from your property, neighbour statements and correspondence. Separate railway effects from nearby municipal, road or industrial work.
Apply to the Agency
The Canada Transportation Act allows the Agency to examine certain complaints about noise and vibration from railway construction or operation. Follow its process and serve the parties concerned.
