Repeatedly Blocked Rail Crossing: Document and Report the Problem
Distinguish a one-time obstruction from a recurring safety problem and send facts to the right authorities.
If a person, vehicle or immediate hazard is on the track, call 911 and use the emergency number posted at the crossing when safely accessible.
Do not drive around
Never go around a lowered gate or enter without enough space on the far side. Turn around only when the manoeuvre is legal and safe.
Document without distracted driving
From a legal location, record the exact location, date, start and end times, railway, train direction, traffic effects and observed hazards. A passenger may take a photo.
Start with the municipality
Transport Canada recommends first contacting the municipality when an obstruction raises a safety concern. Provide a recurring log rather than a vague estimate.
Escalate the file
For a problematic obstruction, also contact Transport Canada’s regional office with the municipality, intersection, date, time, railway, activity and duration. Keep file numbers.
