Protect people, record the location and operator, distinguish police emergencies from federal oversight, then submit the facts.
Do not approach tracks, a stopped train or equipment to document a concern. A collision, person on the track or immediate obstruction requires 911.
Confirm the scope
Determine whether the issue concerns rail safety, security, dangerous goods, noise or a municipal crossing because remedies differ.
Prepare the information
Record the subdivision or crossing, road, municipality, time, direction, visible locomotive or car number and observations from safety.
Complete the process
Notify emergency services first when needed, then the railway and Transport Canada according to the issue.
Keep follow-up records
Keep file numbers, replies and dated recurrences; a chronic concern is easier to verify with a precise chronology.
