Obtain a Canadian military service record: choose the right service
Identify the period and record status, prepare required proof and send the request to Library and Archives or National Defence.
Do not send identification, a service number or proof of death to an address found on an unofficial site. Use only the channel specified for the record.
Identify the person
Gather the full name used during service, date of birth, service number if known, force, unit and period. Note spelling variants.
Determine the holder
Transferred historical records are generally held by Library and Archives Canada; more recent files may remain with the Department of National Defence.
Check restrictions
Access depends on record age, death, privacy and your authority. Prepare proof of death, consent or relationship only when requested.
Make a targeted request
Specify the document or information sought and practical purpose. Keep confirmation and tracking number; an archival request does not automatically grant medals, benefits or a record correction.
