Secure Certificate of Indian Status: apply for the first time, renew or replace the card
Confirm registration, choose the application route, prepare identity and photo, then protect the number after loss or theft.
The card proves registration; it does not itself create status. For theft or fraudulent use, also report the incident to the appropriate services.
Confirm the situation
Check whether the person is already registered under the Indian Act. Registration and a status-card application are separate processes.
Choose the channel
Depending on the case, use the online service, mail, an ISC office or a First Nation office offering the service. Check whether an appointment is required.
Prepare evidence
Gather identity, a compliant photo, registration details, guarantor or referee if required and documents for a name or custody change.
Track and protect
Keep a copy and confirmation. For a lost, stolen or damaged card, follow replacement instructions and never publish the number.
