Stolen Mail or Package in Quebec: Canada Post, Police and Remedies

Distinguish delay from theft, open the right cases and quickly protect missing personal information or payment methods.

Verify delivery first. Compare the address, tracking, time, delivery photo and notices. Check entrances, neighbours, concierge and safe locations without publicly accusing anyone. Save screenshots before tracking data changes.

Mail removed from a mailbox

Canada Post recommends notifying police and its customer-service team when mail theft is suspected. Also report an open or damaged community-mailbox door. Keep the service-ticket and police occurrence numbers.

A missing package marked delivered

Open an investigation with the carrier and notify the merchant or sender in writing. For some shipments, only the sender can claim compensation, so ask them to open the file. Preserve the invoice, tracking, content description, remaining packaging and available video.

Online purchase

In Quebec, a stolen, lost or missing package can lead to the same consumer remedies as delayed delivery. Request performance, replacement or cancellation as applicable with the facts in writing, then use the Office de la protection du consommateur process if the merchant refuses.

Documents, cards or identity

Immediately notify the issuer of a missing card, cheque, identity document or tax record. Monitor accounts and contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre if the information is used or identity theft is suspected. Do not publish images showing a barcode or full address.
