Unsafe gas appliance or installation: emergency response and RBQ complaint

Handle a leak or poisoning first, document the installation and route a regulatory problem to the RBQ.

Gas odour or symptoms

Leave immediately without using switches, an indoor phone, flames or a vehicle near the leak. Call the distributor or 911 from a safe place.

Do not restart it

After the emergency, do not use the appliance until a qualified person authorizes it. Ventilate only as responders instruct.

Identify the installation

Record address, appliance type, fuel, make, data plate, installer, work date and symptoms. Keep contracts, invoices and reports.

Notify responsible parties

Inform the owner, manager, contractor or distributor as applicable. Request a written response and the company’s licence number.

Report to the RBQ

The RBQ accepts complaints and reports about installations within its jurisdiction, including gas. The regulatory process does not replace a claim, landlord notice or legal remedy.
